Cotta Craft Co-Operative an initiative of CJMAS.

Bluefields, Jamaica

In 2006 CJMAS founder Ron Wong and wife Carol, sought Bluefields Peoples Association Board's
permission to revive a sewing project that had been in operation some years before; the project was renamed and Cotta craft was born. The plan was to provide seed money and expertise to create a business that would produce craft items for the Jamaican Tourist Industry.

Cotta refers to the circle of cloth used on the head to carry heavy loads - still seen in Jamaica to-day. Our group of artisans chose this historic term to name their enterprise. Cotta Craft produces table linens and cushion covers hand printed with local leaves and ferns. Colorful bandana cloth is used to make aprons and patio tablecloths and napkins. Silk Screening logos and lettering can be done by request. The group produces school uniforms in the slow tourist season. Unisex African batik dressing gowns in bright patterns are a new, sought after item.

Cotta Craft is sensitive to the environment, using locally bought natural materials and non toxic water soluble paint. Some work is commissioned from those who can only work in their homes and hours of work are flexed to accommodate travel, religious and family obligations. When possible Cotta Craft donates and supports the Bluefields community at large. Carol was interview by Yards Edge a Jamaican community online magazine. Cotta Craft Co-Operative is providing much needed jobs for just a few but maybe will inspire other sustainable micro projects in Jamaica.
